Make A Winning Bid With Auction Tips From The Experts.

A good chunk of the crowd at this weekly Seattle auction is not like you.
They are antiques dealers experienced in fast paced bidding, who might signal a bid with a mere nod of the head. Relentless in their hunt for good deals, they will try to psyche you out to get the treasure hidden in a box of junk.
But spend a little time with them at Seattle's Pacific Galleries Auction House and you'll come out a little smarter about how to nab the best deals.
Most of the items at its weekly auctions are from estate sales, including furniture, art, jewelry and household goods.
The quality varies, but there are always bargains.
At a recent auction, Justin Ferguson and Scott Lewis scored a sofa for $5 and a Danish rocker for $70 for their store, Garage Sale Paradise. They were willing to bid more on both.
Dealers look for pieces that will net them a profit in their store or on eBay, and are smart about what they buy.
Fritz Newell, who sells antiques and collectibles, saw one dealer buy 100 pieces of silverware for $10. That tray included a piece of sterling that will sell for $60 or $70.
"Auction is a lot of research," he said.
Pam Favro, who sells at Pike Place Market, bought a print at this auction for $15. The print was worn, but the antique frame was nice. She said she plans to replace the print and sell it
You might be willing to pay more than a dealer because you don't need to make a profit. But it still takes patience, time and experience to navigate an auction.
Before you go, heed some advice from the experts.
Rule No. 1: Do your research. You can preview the weekly Monday auctions starting on the previous Fridays. Decide what you want and how much you will pay. The finished auctions area on eBay is a good way to gauge the market price for an item.
Rule No. 2: Don't let excitement and adrenaline get the best of you. Decide on a cap for what you will bid and stick to it. Most newcomers make the mistake of bidding too high and driving up prices, dealers said.
Rule No. 3: Dig for treasure. Dealers love the box lots, which might contain one or two pieces that are far more valuable than the rest of the junk.
Rule No. 4: Check the item's condition carefully. Sometimes there's a good reason you're the only one bidding.
The auctions are not raucous, but the bidding is fast, lasting at most about a minute per piece. Pay attention or you might lose out on a good deal. If the thought of bidding makes you tremble, however, go to one first to watch and learn.
"Most people who come to auction, come back to auction," said Lynn Kenyon, Pacific Galleries' chief operations officer. "It's an event. It's exciting. You never know what you're going to pay."
Pacific Galleries Auction House, which opened in 1972, also holds a premier auction of high-end art and antiques every six weeks. The next one is May 9 and 10, with previews on May 5, 6 and 8.

Woman Nearly Junks $400,000 Treasure.

An auctioneer's curiosity earned an Asheville woman nearly $400,000.
The woman was trying to get rid of an old painting she had inherited. She was willing to sell it for $100. She took it to Johnny Penland, of Tommy Tuten and Johnny Penland Auctions.
He asked her to let him check into the painting's history, and consulted with Christie's auction house in New York. An expert there identified it as the work of Dutch Baroque artist Jan Havicksz Steen. It brought almost $397,000 at auction on Thursday.
The painting shows children playing a game on a winter landscape. It was probably painted around 1660.

A rare panoramic photo of the 1928 New York Yankees, including portraits of such legends as Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, and Leo Durocher, will be offered in Heritage Auction Galleries’ upcoming Sports Memorabilia Signature Auction to be held on May 6, 2006 in Dallas, Texas.
“In the wake of the record-setting price of $89,625 realized for a 1911 Addie Joss Day panoramic photograph in our October 2005 Signature auction, it's no wonder that the hobby press generated quite a response from consignors hoping for similar results,” said Chris Ivy, Director of Sports Auctions for HG&A.
“Offered here is one of the most remarkable pieces to surface in the weeks following the auction, a stunningly pristine and previously unknown image of the reigning World Champs, snapped at Spring Training just months after the Babe clubbed his sixtieth. The photograph comes from the estate of a pair of wealthy sisters in St. Petersburg, Florida, where thirty-six members of this legendary squad lined up for photographer ‘M.P. Mayberry,’ whose mark is found at the lower right side of this amazing work. You'll be hard-pressed to find an image with a greater supply of Hall of Fame Yankees, as we are offered crystal-clear portraits of Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Tony Lazzeri, Bill Dickey, Leo Durocher, Stanley Coveleski, Waite Hoyt, Earle Combs, Herb Pennock and diminutive manager Miller Huggins. Even famed hunchback batboy Eddie Bennett is here, sitting Indian-style at Cedric Durst's feet.”
“An interesting bit of photographer's trickery expands the photo past its original dimensions,” Ivy said, “as the sharp-eyed observer will note that a white vertical stripe four inches from the left marks the spot where two negatives were joined to complete the vastness of the scene, measuring thirty-one inches in width at a height of eight inches.”
“While it might be difficult to believe that this spectacular find remains in Near Mint condition,” Ivy continued, “there is not a single crease, tear or stain to be found, and short of some mild toning to the backside of the photograph, which has clearly remained rolled for the entirety of its eighty-eight years of life, we encounter no other sign of the wear and tear of passing decades. In poor condition this would be a thrilling find, but as it stands we don't hesitate to call this piece one of the finest photographs to reach the auction block in recent memory.”

Dolls and miniatures from a number of well-known private collectors will be featured at two auctions in the suburbs next week, while an estate sale this evening also will offer the opportunity to think small.
Sanford Alderfer Auction Co. will offer more than 1,100 lots of dolls, puppets and marionettes; teddy bears and other stuffed animals; dollhouses; miniature furniture and tableware; and doll parts at a two-day sale titled "Sweet Memories."
Most of the items - many from the estates of Louise Winkler and Philadelphia opera singer Pauline Birdsall Adamy and from the Pennsylvania Doll Club - will be sold at the sale's second session, beginning at 9 a.m. Thursday at Alderfer's gallery, 501 Fairgrounds Rd., Hatfield.
About 50 of those lots also will be offered live on eBay, including a French bisque doll from the Adamy estate that is expected to sell for $1,750 to $2,000. One or two other dolls also may sell for more than $1,000. But most of the 140 traditional bisque dolls that will open Thursday's session are expected to bring modest three-figure prices.
Two German-made bisque dolls that depict bathing beauties and will be sold on eBay are attracting a lot of attention, said doll consultant Roxanne LeMay Morison: One has a swimsuit painted on, the other is in the buff. Morison said presale estimates were $150 to $300, but that she expected the prices to go far higher.
An American Indian doll about seven inches high is expected to sell for $300 to $400. "People like it because of the beadwork on its costumes," Morison said.
The 500 lots in the first session, to begin at 1 p.m. Wednesday, will include small dolls, some of them tourist figures, doll clothes, body parts, and supplies.
Previews are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday and 7 a.m. to sale time Thursday. For more information, call 215-393-3000 or go to www.alderferauction.com.
Doll-size sterling and ivory miniatures from the collection of Carolyn Sunstein, who for years ran the Philadelphia Miniature Show, will be featured April 8 and 9 at a sale conducted by Eileen and Ron Rhoads at their farm in Douglassville. This auction also will be conducted live on eBay.
All told, more than 750 lots - including doll dishware from the collection of Julie Kilcullen and peddler dolls and miniatures from the estate of Elizabeth Hague - will be offered at the auction's two sessions, at 1 p.m. April 8 and 10 a.m. April 9.
The hundreds of Sunstein miniatures, which will be sold at both sessions, range in size from a half-inch to five inches and feature works by such contemporary artists as Peter Acquisto and Obadiah Fisher. Typical of them is an engraved water pitcher by Fisher and a miniature dresser set.
Among the dishes from the Kilcullen collection is a Kewpie dish set in its original box that is expected to bring $800 to $1,000 at the first session.
Items from the Hague estate will be offered at the second session. Among the dolls depicting itinerant 18th-century English peddlers is one with a wax face made in the early 19th century that is expected to sell for $3,000 to $5,000.
Tonight's chance to think small will take place at Briggs Auction's special estate and decorative-arts sale in Boothwyn beginning at 5 p.m.
From the estate of a Navy admiral comes a large collection of classic sterling and plate, much of it made in Baltimore, and a set of Annapolis china.
There are clocks, too, including several case clocks. Most case clocks are tall, but going on the block tonight are two "dwarf" case clocks made by Elmer Stennes of Massachusetts, each about four feet high. Briggs president John Turner expects them to sell for $3,500 to $4,000 each.

Churchill's Popularity Never Fades.

It is just as well, all things considered, that David Cameron promptly gave up smoking as soon as he was elected the new, squeaky-clean Tory leader.
What with a 9p inflation-matching rise on a packet of 20 cigarettes in the Budget and the forthcoming legislation to make smoking in public places illegal, lighting up is clearly not the done thing in political circles nowadays.
It was ever thus. Next month, a half-smoked cigar discarded by Sir Winston Churchill is coming up for auction at Outhwaite and Litherland in Liverpool.
According to the auctioneers, Churchill was told that he could not smoke it at the Winter Gardens, Blackpool, so stubbed it out and handed the butt to a special constable.
It might not sound like the most appealing item of historical memorabilia (although the prospect of preserving a strand of Churchillian DNA might appeal to cryogenicists) but the auctioneers have given it a "deliberately low" estimate of between £100 and £200.
Churchill memorabilia is a collector's paradise. Seemingly insignificant items, such as a letter apologising for not making a supper appointment and signed 'W' (offered by the American company History for Sale), can fetch £4,000. A pair of his monogrammed blue velvet slippers reached £6,325 at auction eight years ago.
Interest has remained strong, especially from America where Churchill items hold a special attraction. Auction houses have seen a doubling in value for Churchilliana in the past decade: in 1998, Sotheby's sold one of his side arms for more than £17,000.
A mere four years later, another of his revolvers came up for sale and fetched a staggering £32,000.
A complete set of Churchill books could, at a pinch, be bought for about £1,000 in 1990. Now, you would be hard pushed to see change from £3,000 - and that's not even for first editions.
On eBay last week a rare four-volume, first edition set of The Selected Essays of Sir Winston Churchill dating from 1976 attracted 16 bids and went for £746 - to an American purchaser.
The normal precautions apply: mint condition copies are far more valuable than dog-eared examples. It is also worth avoiding copies that have been leatherbound by the owner - books in their original state are always far more attractive to collectors.
The most valuable Churchill books are first editions of the vanity-published Brodrick's Army and For Free Trade: a 1899 copy of Brodrick was sold for £50,000.
And then there are the paintings. In 1998, Lord Harris of Peckham paid a record £150,000 at Christie's for Churchill's Mimizan, Landes - a view of the Duke of Westminster's house in the South of France. It had been bought in 1965 by an American collector for £9,500.
As for that cigar butt, we'll just have to wait and see: never will they have bid so much for so little.

The last home run ball hit by Babe Ruth at Yankee Stadium is being offered in an online auction, March 30, to help pay a college student's loans.
A Georgia grandfather is helping his grandson pay off his college loans with the upcoming sale of an old, autographed baseball -- the last home run ball ever hit by Babe Ruth at Yankee Stadium in a World War II fund-raising exhibition game in 1942.
Robert J. Balthazar, 78, of Sautee, Georgia was 15 years old when he attended that game, obtained the ball and got it autographed by Ruth and two other Hall of Fame members, pitcher Walter "Big Train" Johnson and umpire Billy Evans.
He kept the ball in a sock drawer wrapped in a glove for over a half century, and now it will be offered in a sports memorabilia auction conducted by Memory Lane, Inc. of Tustin, California (www.MemoryLaneInc.com). The proceeds will used by his grandson, Joey Buck, to pay his student loans at the University of Louisiana-Lafayette.
A former New Yorker, Balthazar and his father went to see the Yankess play the Washington Senators at Yankee Stadium on August 23, 1942. In between the double header there was an exhibition game to raise money for the Army-Navy Relief Fund, and Walter Johnson pitched against Babe Ruth.
Ruth hit his last home run at Yankee Stadium that day, and the ball landed near Balthazar's father, Irving, who then gave it to him. It was signed after the game by three Hall of Fame members: Ruth, Johnson and umpire Evans.
The autographs recently were certified genuine by Professional Sports Authenticator (PSA/DNA).
Ruth had retired from playing baseball seven years before that 1942 exhibition game. His home run electrified the crowd of more than 69,000 fans at Yankee Stadium.
A headline in the August 24, 1942 edition of the New York Post read: "Babe Ruth Never Was One To Disappoint His Public." The same day the New York World-Telegram Newspaper declared in a headline: "Babe Still Hero To Delighted Crowd -- And To Present Yankees."

Bargain-Hunters Expected To Duke It Out At Auction Of Cunningham's Treasures.

Bargain-Hunters Expected To Duke It Out At Auction Of Cunningham's Treasures.
We now know that former Congressman Randy "Duke" Cunningham had a taste for antiques. And the public is about to get a taste of his taste.
But interested buyers had better bring a fat wallet.
More than four dozen items forfeited to the feds by the disgraced Republican lawmaker ---- now imprisoned for taking $2.4 million in bribes ---- will hit the auction block Thursday in the Los Angeles suburb of Rancho Dominguez. And anyone interested can participate not only in the auction, but in two days of preview showings of the merchandise on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The booty is that which investigators said was part of Cunningham's ill-gotten gains: Some items were directly purchased for him by businessmen seeking fat government contracts; others were bought with bribe money. All will be sold Thursday alongside other items forfeited or seized in criminal cases.
Cunningham's candelabra and cherrywood sleigh bed will share auction block space with items taken from drug dealers and tax evaders. All of the items at Thursday's auction under the heading of "antiques" were once in Cunningham's home.
Britney Sheehan, spokeswoman for EG&G Technical Services, the company running the auction, isn't spilling secrets about how high the opening bids will be for the congressman's cache. But she did say that Cunningham's antiques were moved up from San Diego to the auction house, and that the market there may sustain higher bids.
But how much will his property net? Hard to estimate.
Encinitas-based personal property appraiser Paul McConnell agreed to take on the very tough task of reviewing photos and descriptions of Cunningham's antiques to come up with a ballpark figure of their retail value. McConnell specializes in appraisals of European and American furniture, and for a few years taught a six-week course on the history of furniture.
Although he was unable to view the furniture directly, McConnell said most of the furniture doesn't appear to be true period pieces. Instead, he said, they seem to have been made in the 1800s, after the Industrial Revolution, as reproductions of French styles ranging from Renaissance to baroque to rococo to neoclassic.
"They are nice decorative pieces, but not museum quality," McConnell said. "Many people would be very proud to have these. They are not the finest, nor the worst."
McConnell said some of Cunningham's larger pieces, such as a walnut armoire with mirrors and a carved crown, could retail in the range of $5,000 to $6,000. Some of his several nightstands could sell in a store for about $600 to $700 each, he estimated.
But would everyday people be willing to pony up such prices?
Stopped outside a local warehouse store and shown photos of the auction items, San Marcos resident Margie Centner, 70, remarked that the pieces seemed "pretty."
"I wish I could go (to the auction)," she said. "We've got good taste, we just don't have any money."
Told who had previously owned the items, Centner and her husband, Jim, both winced.
"I feel so sorry for that man," said Jim Centner, 78. "He's a veteran and I'm a veteran."
It was a common reaction among other people who also viewed the photos without knowing they were once in Cunningham's home.
"How sad that greed makes the ethics bend," said Oceanside resident Oleta Woolsey as she thumbed through the stack of photos a second time after learning the items were Cunningham's collection.
Their response brings up a question with an answer unknowable until the auction: Could the notoriety of Cunningham's fall from grace bring a higher dollar value? Folks on the street generally think it will.
"I'm sure there will be people there who would not normally go," Woolsey said.
Others think the auction could go either way.
"I think it will depend on people's sense of humor and their sense of value," said Harold Davis as he snacked with his daughter outside a Vista store. Davis noted that some folks might shy away from the items simply because they were once Cunningham's. But others, he said, will snap them up "as a novelty."
Davis was also struck by the sheer amount of Cunningham furniture up for bid.
"All this was in his home?" Davis said, looking at the photos. "Coming from this to a jail cell."
His daughter, Deborah Davis, scanned the photos and guessed that each item might yield bids into the thousands, some larger armoires going for as much as $11,000 each.
EG&G, the government contractor handling the auction, runs some 250 similar auctions across the country each year, spokeswoman Sheehan said. Most of the items are run-of-the-mill property associated with a criminal case, either forfeited to or seized by the government.
Many people are already familiar with the idea that the government auctions off confiscated cars and the like.
But in the 16 years that EG&G has contracted with the Department of the Treasury, quite a few treasures ---- and oddities ---- have found their way to the government auction block.
In 1994, EG&G, at the request of the federal government, sold off the Royal Kenfield Golf Course in Nevada ---- a property seized after an investigation uncovered an international money-laundering scheme, Sheehan said.
And two weeks before Christmas in 2002, the company auctioned off furnishings from the "Mustang Ranch," the famed Nevada brothel.
Closer to home, EG&G also ran the auction for items forfeited by former PinnFund USA Inc. Chief Financial Officer John Garitta, after the investigation into the now-defunct Carlsbad company turned up a Ponzi scheme that was one of California's most egregious income tax and investment fraud cases.
The PinnFund items auctioned off included "really expensive bottles of wine and jewelry," Sheehan said.
Cunningham's stuff includes roughly 35 "lots," which in auction terms can be one item ---- a French commode, for example ---- or a group of items sold together, like a pair of matching nightstands.
The money from the sale of Cunningham's cache goes back into the Treasury Assets Forfeiture Fund, and will be split among the agencies which investigated Cunningham.
The public auction of Randy "Duke" Cunningham's furniture will be held at 9 a.m. Thursday at EG&G Technical Services, 2332 E. Pacifica Place, Rancho Dominguez. Preview days are 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday. Call (703) 273-7373 or visit www.treas.gov/auctions/customs.

Town Auctioned On EBay Up For Sale Again.

FOR THE FULL AND UP TO DATE LIST OF USA AUCTIONS VISIT THE FREE NEWSLETTER AT: http://www.usa-government-auctions.com/template.html

The first town ever auctioned on eBay soon will be back up for sale on the online auction site.
Nearly two years after he bought the tiny town of Bridgeville, Orange County financial adviser Bruce Krall said Friday he plans to re-auction the Humboldt County hamlet on eBay next month.
"Due to family reasons, I'm pretty much tied to Southern California for the foreseeable future," Krall said. "We can't move up there. It only makes sense to pass it on to somebody else."
Krall said the auction will open April 4 with a minimum bid of $1.75 million — more than twice what he paid for the 83-acre property about 40 miles southwest of Eureka.
Bridgeville, a picturesque village with about 25 people on the Van Duzen River, sparked a bidding war in 2002 when it became the first town ever put up for sale on eBay.
The buyer, who won the auction with a $1.78 million bid, never came to see the property and the deal fell through. The property was eventually posted on traditional real estate listings, and Krall bought it for about $700,000 in May 2004.
Since then, Krall said he's invested "multiple hundreds of thousands of dollars" to restore old buildings, remove dilapidated structures and clean up mounds of garbage. He also found new tenants for the houses and received a conditional use permit for a riverfront resort.
"It's come full circle," Krall said. "Now it's been fixed up, and I think it's actually ready to be sold on eBay."

When Sam Schnaidt opened the Apple Tree Auction Center in 1983 in a former Newark dairy supply store, he thought the 4,000-square-foot building would give him plenty of room for storing and selling items. But since then, he's expanded the business so much that he's lost count of the number of times it has added space. "We've had five or six major additions, and we're always making little changes here and there, and we'll probably keep growing," he said. The center now covers 32,000 square feet in buildings on both sides of West Church Street just off Route 16. It employs 20 people, a dozen of them full-time, and has gross sales of $4 million to $5 million a year. The live auction industry as a whole had gross sales of $240.2 billion in 2005, a $23 billion increase from the previous year, according to research for the National Auctioneers Association. One of the building's expansions, all financed mostly from the center's earnings, took out the apple tree that gave the business its name. "It was a landmark, but it was standing in the way of space we needed," Schnaidt said. "So the tree had to go, but since it's in our company logo and name, it will always be connected to this property." But his reasoning behind naming the center for the tree was practical as well as sentimental. "With a name like Schnaidt, I'd be pretty far down in any alphabetical listing of antique dealers if I named the center after me," he said. "I wanted something that would put it near the beginning, and the tree gave me an inspiration to choose Apple Tree." Getting started Schnaidt, 64, has been interested in antiques all his life. "My parents were antique collectors and used to go to shows in the 1950s and bring me back wooden toys," he said. "That's what got me started and I've been in the business ever since."

Rare Pistol Given To Napoleon Up For Auction.

A historic pistol given to Napoleon Bonaparte by a flamboyant English army officer in 1802 is expected to fetch £25,000-30,000 when it is sold at auction next month. The gold-inlaid, 120-bore, three-barrelled flintlock pocket pistol is one of a pair and thought to be the only weapon ever given to Napoleon by an Englishman. It was presented to the French general and 'First Consul' by Lt Col Thomas Thornton when he visited France during a lull in hostilities in the Napoleonic Wars.David Williams, head of arms and armour at Bonhams auction house, said: "It's absolutely fascinating. The pistol itself is beautiful with all the gold inlay. They were usually rather more restrained at the time."It's interesting in its own right, because of the decoration, because of it's three barrels, which is very unusual, and it's in very good condition, but also because it has this interesting history."Any connection with Napoleon and people are very interested. It's extrememly rare."Thornton was famous as one of the most dedicated sportsmen of the 18th and 19th centuries, dividing his time between hunting, racing, shooting, angling and hawking. In his words he had "a greater quantity of sporting apparatus of the most valuable and curious manufacture than any other sporting gentleman in England."He was also well known for his many mistresses. One of these was Alicia Meynell or Massingham, the 'Norwich Nymph' who was famous in her own right for her horse race against Captain Flint at York racecourse in 1804, and again on the following year when she beat Edward Buckle, the top jockey of his day. Thornton bet 1,000 guineas on the first race, which he lost but reneged on the bet, leading to an inconclusive court case. He then put 2,000 guineas on the second race, which Alicia won, after which Thornton was publicly horsewhipped by the disgruntled winner of the first race.Thornton visited France with his mistress before the Revolution and again in 1802, when he made a sporting trip through the country. The journey was possible because of the brief peace created by the Treaty of Amiens, which followed Napoleon's victory over the Austrians at Marengo in 1800.Thornton presented the ornate pistols, made by Durs Egg of London, and featuring engravings of Thornton's family coat of arms on one side and a scroll with the battle honour 'Marengo' on the other, to Napoleon's aide-de-camp General Duroc. Soon afterwards he met Napoleon himself. It is thought the gift of the pistols was an attempt by Thornton to win support as he fought to rebuild his reputation after he was court martialled over an incident when his soldiers pulled him round Roborough army camp in a gun carriage. He wrote his side of the story in a pamphlet called 'An Elucidation of a Mutinous Conspiracy entered into by the officers of the West York Regiment of Militia against their Commanding Officer in year 1794'Mr Williams said: "Thornton himself was a very interesting guy. He was quite an eccentric."He was fairly enamoured by Napoleon and ended up living in France after the war. He was a francophile. He even styled himself Prince of Chambord and Marquess de Pont."The other pistol was sold in 1986 and its current whereabouts are unknown. This one is being sold by a private collector.Mr Williams said: "It really is a fascinating thing and it's a direct link with history."We don't know where other one is. It would be quite interesting if the sale of this one throws the other one up."

When local sculptor Cory Holmes checked his Web site's email box a few weeks ago, he came across one that just said “From Jill,” with no subject. Thinking it was probably some kind of computer virus, he almost erased it. But by “some kind of fluke” he opened the message.
In the e-mail, Miss Montana USA Jill McLain introduced herself as a Havre native and asked Holmes if he would make a sculpture for the Miss USA charity auction to benefit the Cystic Fybrosis Foundation.
Holmes readily agreed to help out.
“How many times does Havre have a Miss USA?” he said Tuesday.
McLain needed to bring something to the auction that represents her home state. She was familiar with Holmes' buffalo sculpture on First Street, and that led her to the artist.
“I'm from Havre. I saw the buffalo and thought it was amazing,” McLain said Tuesday.
Past contestants have brought quilts and paintings, and McLain said she wanted her entry to be “a little different.”
Holmes had many ideas for a subject. He initially started sculpting a horse, thinking that “everyone back East would first think of cowboys” when envisioning Montana.
Holmes had been particularly happy with a Canada goose he sculpted for aDucks Unlimited fundraiser, so he decided to do a similar piece for McLain.
“This one's going to be better. I think I sort of figured it all out,” he said.
Holmes said he is approached by about a dozen charities and benefits a year and usually does a piece for about four.
“Nobody can do everything for everybody all the time,” he said.
Holmes also has done sculptures for the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and local benefits for cancer victims.
“I don't want to make geese all my life, but never say never.
“I don't want to do any more buffalo, once is enough,” he added.
Holmes has come up with two possible titles for the goose: “Montana, The Last Best Place” and “Montana: Tall, Wide and Handsome.”
“It was really cool for him to say yes. We were thrilled,” Jill's mother, Stephanie McLain, said.
The goose will be his 15th sculpture this year. He is perhaps best known for his “fence art,” which are metal sculptures of various bugs and other subjects that are found all over Montana as well as many places across North America. Holmes estimates that he has 600 pieces scattered around.
The Cystic Fibrosis Charity Auction is April 8 in Baltimore. Holmes has to finish the sculpture by March 31.
Holmes said he hopes to get the sculpture done by Monday, when he is set to attend the Western College of Auctioneers in Billings.
He said the other goose took him about 60 hours.
“These geese have a lot of feathers,” Holmes said.
In his workshop north of Havre, Holmes does each feather by hand. He flattens steel rods with a trip hammer, which is a blacksmith's tool, and then polishs the feathers with a grinder.
Jill McLain will represent Montana in the 55th Annual Miss USA Competition on April 21.
Jill McLain, 21, is a senior at Dickinson State University in North Dakota.
She will graduate next year after cutting her courseload in order to be available for pageant activities.
She was born and raised in Havre and graduated from Havre High School in 2002. Jill McLain said she is looking into attending grad school and wants to move back to Montana.
“When I give them this, I'd like to at least get to meet her. All I got was an email,” Holmes said.
